Your assignment is to read a book that was
adapted into a movie. Then, you will watch the movie adaptation. You must choose a book that you have never read. If you have seen the
movie adaptation before, that is fine.
Write a
paper comparing and contrasting the book and the movie. Was
it a good adaptation? Focus on
changes that were made and WHY. Focus on things in the movie that were
inherently cinematic and things in the text that couldn’t really be replicated.
You must keep in mind that a book and a movie are two different “animals.” Try
to speak with a more literary voice in this essay. Do not allow your anger over
what was changed color your writing. Instead, intelligently discuss the changes
and try to put yourself in the mind of the filmmakers. Also, spend a little time judging the movie on its own merits, separate
from the book.
